Recap of 43rd annual Doolittle Scholarship Open Golf Tournament
The 43rd annual Doolittle Scholarship Open golf tournament was held on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at the Eglin Golf Course in Niceville. Our tournament this year was one of the most financially successful in the history of the tournament, netting almost $32,000. It was played on the historic Eagle course, the oldest golf course in the area. The tournament is sponsored by the Eglin Air Force Association Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Proceeds from the tournament will help provide college scholarships for deserving Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) cadets at area high schools, top graduates at the Community High Okaloosa Institutes for Career Education (CHOICE) Okaloosa Aerospace Academy at both Choctawhatchee and Crestview High Schools, as well as the Air Force ROTC program at the University of West Florida. The foundation also provides resources for the Engineers for America program at the Air Force Armament Museum, the Civil Air Patrol, CHOICE Okaloosa Aerospace Academy at Shoal River Middle School, in addition to other math and science fairs in the county. In 2011, the foundation surpassed the $1 million mark for funds raised, based in large part to the generous support of our local community.

Fisher House 5K
On March 7th, 2015,140 athletes braved a sunny but chilly Florida morning to participate in the 5th Annual Fisher House 5K. Presented by the Eglin Air Force Association and the Eglin Top 3 Association and with generous sponsorship from the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, this year’s event was a resounding success!  This year’s race was held on the campus of Northwest Florida State College and it was truly a family event. The event consisted of a 5K race, a 5K walk and 1 mile fun run for the children.   The overall male 5K winner was Ben Eell, with a time of 17:20, and the overall female winner was Ava Suydan coming in at 21.39.  Everyone enjoyed the post-race party and awards ceremony, feasting on the red beans and rice catered by the Magnolia Grill.   Additional thanks to Bluewater Fitness and Wellness Center, Total Parts Plus, VFW Post 7674, Association of the US Army (AUSA), Eglin Federal Credit Union, Emerald Coast Military Affairs Committee, Investments Unlimited, Run With It, and Magnolia Grill.  All proceeds from this race go to support the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast.  This year’s event raised approximately $4,000, putting the 5-year total at approximately $34,000!  Many thanks to the local community and sponsors for their incredible support!

We are always looking for participants, sponsors, volunteers and donors, so please contact our race director, Eddie McAllister, at mcallister.eddie@gmail.com for more details on the 2016 Fisher House 5K.

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 58,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs about 85 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 70 lives annually. Its unpaid professionals also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 24,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs. Performing missions for America for the past 73 years, CAP received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014 in honor of the heroic efforts of its World War II veterans. CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans. Visit www.capvolunteernow.com for more information.
